FAQs for Reporting general concerns
I am concerned about a student, what should I do? What are some of the things that may happen after I submit a referral?
You can submit a Concern for an Individual referral to share your specific concerns. These referrals are reviewed during business hours and are routed to the appropriate office for follow up. After a referral is submitted, typically staff make direct outreach to the student of concern to provide resource information and an opportunity to schedule a one-on-one meeting for additional support. Staff can help provide students with direct referrals to appropriate campus resources, as needed.
I am concerned about a faculty member, what should I do? What are some of the things that may happen after I submit a referral?
If you are concerned about a faculty member, you can submit a Concern for an Individual referral to share your concerns. These referrals are shared with appropriate offices, including with Faculty Affairs. In most cases, a representative from Faculty Affairs reviews the referral and may gather additional information, then will reach out to the faculty member’s department chair (i.e., supervisor). The department chair may be asked to check in on the faculty member and, if necessary, offer resource referrals.
In non-imminent instances where the concerns raised are in regard to a faculty member potentially harming themselves or others, the referral is reviewed and managed in coordination with the Office of Threat Assessment and Management, UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety, and other relevant campus offices.
I am concerned about a staff member, what should I do? What are some of the things that may happen after I submit a referral?
If you are concerned about a staff member, you can submit a Concern for an Individual to share your concerns. These referrals are shared with appropriate offices, including with Human Resources. In most cases, a representative from Human Resources reviews the referral and may gather additional information, if needed, then will reach out to the employee or employee’s supervisor to relay resources and to discuss options that may be available, such as resources through the Employee Assistance Program.
In non-imminent instances where the concerns raised are in regard to a staff member potentially harming themselves or others, the referral is reviewed and managed in coordination with the Office of Threat Assessment and Management, UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety, and other relevant campus offices.
I am concerned about an individual who is not affiliated with the University, what should I do? What are some of the things that may happen after I submit a referral?
If your concern is regarding an individual who is not affiliated with the University, and is threatening or displaying violent behaviors directed toward a member of the UNC Charlotte community or campus, you are encouraged to share your concerns and observations with UNC Charlotte by submitting a Concern for an Individual referral.
Referrals are reviewed by the Office of Threat Assessment and Management and campus partners, such as UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety. Attempts are made to gather additional relevant information in order to assess the individual of concern’s level of threat and determine appropriate next steps.
It is important to note that unaffiliated individuals are not able to utilize campus resources. However, the University may connect individuals to community resources, make a referral to local law enforcement agencies, and/or take campus safety actions as needed. Additionally, the University generally tries to engage with the impacted parties to learn more about the situation, discuss options, and to provide resources and support referrals.
What resources are available to me if I am concerned about my physical safety?
If you are concerned about your physical safety while on campus, you are encouraged to contact UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety. Detectives are able to discuss safety resources with you, such as GoSafe in the LiveSafe App, Blue Light emergency phones, safe rides, and provide referrals for campus and community resources, as appropriate. Additionally, detectives can engage with you to create a safety plan and can discuss options for a University no-contact order, a civil protective order, and/or pursuing criminal charges.
Can I submit my concerns to the University anonymously?
Yes, you can submit a Concern for an Individual referral anonymously. Should you choose to submit anonymously, it is important to note that it may be difficult for staff to follow up on the information shared, should there be a need for additional information.
